The past two days have been busy here, to say the least! Wednesday's freak thunderstorms resulted in many scared pooches finding their way here after running away from home. Yesterday, channels 8, 10 and 6 were here to do segments on the lost dogs, as was the Union-Tribune. Click on the below links to check out the stories:

These stories are good reminders of how important it is that your pets wear proper identification at all times and be microchipped so they can be returned home quickly if lost.

Desperate Housecats adoption special
The Escondido Humane Society may not be on Wisteria Lane, but we do have desperate housecats – desperate for new families, that is!
Visit us in June and adopt an adult cat for just $55; that’s 50 percent off the normal adoption fee! During the Desperate Housecats promotion, an adult cat is any cat age 6 months and older, and we have them in all sizes, colors and ages. All cats are microchipped, up to date on vaccinations, and spayed or neutered.
As an added twist, we have given five cats the secret nicknames of Edie, Bree, Lynette, Gabrielle and Susan (after the Desperate Housewives themselves, of course!). Anyone who adopts the cats with the secret nicknames will receive a special surprise!
The Desperate Housecats adoption promotion coincides with Adopt-A-Shelter Cat Month, so what better time to consider bringing a new family member into your heart and home? For more information, call our adoption counselors at (760) 888-2247 or go to http://www.escondidohumanesociety.org/.

Calendar Contest still seeking entries

You know that your pet is the cutest/prettiest/most handsome on the block – now you can show the world by entering the Escondido Humane Society’s “Best Friends 2010” Calendar Contest.
We are accepting entries for the calendar contest now through July 15. The first 50 entries that meet contest guidelines will be featured in our Community Collage, so early birds are guaranteed fame. Eleven winning photographs will appear as the famous Pets of the Month. Pictured here is Max, last year's winner for July.
Every completed entry receives a complimentary high-quality calendar. Your tax-deductible entry donation of $25 supports animal rehabilitation and adoption programs at the shelter, so every entry means a happier life for a pet still waiting to become someone's special "star."
Entry forms can be downloaded at http://www.escondidohumanesociety.org/ehs_056.htm or picked up at the shelter. E-mail completed entries to calendar@escondidohumanesociety.org.

Meet our adoptable dogs at Western Days!
This weekend is Valley Center Western Days just up the road from the Escondido Humane Society. The event includes an old-fashioned parade, Western Shoot-Outs, a carnival, vendors, food and live music. We will participate in the event by taking some of our adoptable dogs for the community to meet, including Snowflake (pictured here). If you are looking for something fun to do, be sure to swing by and say hello!

Dog adoption outreach tomorrow
Community outreach is an important part of what we do here at the Escondido Humane Society. We have dog adoption outreaches almost every weekend. It's great for the dogs because they get to spend an afternoon away from the shelter, and it offers an excellent opportunity for the community to meet adoptable animals away from the shelter. Here's a rundown of our adoption outreaches:
Second Saturday of the month: Kahoots West, 334 W. El North Parkway, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Third Saturday: Foster adoption outreach at Kahoots Rancho Bernardo, Bernardo Plaza Drive
We also hold outreaches at Petco, 1000 W. Valley Parkway, from 10 a.m. to 12:30 one Saturday of every month. There also are bunnies and cats available for adoption on-site.
Check our events calendar at http://www.escondidohumanesociety.org/ehs_075.htm to stay up to date on our outreaches and other events.
